(INFO) The cinema opened in 1911 as a Kinematographentheater in Margareten and from 1919 was called the Margaretner Bürgerkino. It was 'Aryanized' in 1938; its owners Alice and Arnold Kolb were deported and murdered in 1942. After a 1954 remodelling and closure in the 1970s, the Volkshochschule took over the house and reopened it in 1989 as an arthouse cinema.
Its September 21, 1989 reopening began with the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey'; in 2025 Variety ranked it among the 21 coolest cinemas in the world.
