(INFO) The Stadtkino was born in 1981 when Franz Schwartz, with the city's support, reopened the former Kammer-Lichtspiele cinema on Schwarzenbergplatz; from 1993 it served as a Viennale festival venue. In 2013 the operation moved into the Künstlerhaus screening hall on Karlsplatz, designed in 1949 by Alfons Hetmanek. After thorough restoration, the listed auditorium reopened in 2025.

The idea for the Viennale was once conceived in the Künstlerhaus screening hall, its current home; the richly appointed auditorium with murals by Rudolf Eisenmenger and Rudolf Holzinger is considered one of Vienna's most beautiful.
