(INFO) Founded in 1964 by Peter Konlechner and Peter Kubelka as a cinematheque, the museum moved into its own screening room in the Albertina building in 1965. In 1989 the auditorium was redesigned entirely in black following Kubelka's concept of the 'Invisible Cinema', so that nothing distracts from the picture on screen. Today the house preserves more than 31,000 film works and remains active.

As early as 1965 the international archive federation FIAF admitted the young museum as a full member; director Martin Scorsese has been its honorary president since 2005.
