(INFO) In the Kaufmännisches Vereinshaus, built in 1893, Robert Kotas converted a theatre hall into a cinema in 1951, run by the municipal Kiba cinema chain. The room had previously served as an entertainment venue and housed various theatre stages. In 2002 Filmarchiv Austria took over the house, renovated it and made it its main venue. Since 2015 it has been called METRO Kinokulturhaus.
The listed main auditorium goes back to the domed festival hall of the 1893 Vereinshaus, which Emperor Franz Joseph I opened in person.
